Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the most important composers of all time. He was born in 1685 in Eisenach and during his lifetime his music created an enormous sensation. Bach came from a dynasty of musicians whose name was used synonymously in Thuringia for town musicians. After his early years in Arnstadt and Muelhausen, Bach composed significant works in his productive years in Weimar and Koethen.
In 1723 he took up his post as Thomas Cantor in Leipzig where until his death in 1750 he wrote and performed his incomparable church music. Bach, who was also the father of 20 children, not only shaped the music of the 18th Century with his compositions but also inspired artists of all genres up to the present day so that 300 years later there are still many surprises in the way that he is received. Did you know that Paul Simon’s “Bridge over troubled waters” was based on a Bach chorale?
